The typical P25 DVRS (Digital Vehicular Repeater System) is a not so small albeit rugged, self contained 3-10W, radio base stations integrated with, usually a remote mounted mobile radio due to the combined RF equipment footprint.  Depending on the licensed frequency of operation, they often require large, cumbersome RF filters, so as to not inhibit communications reception range over the host mobile radio. But no matter their format, these traditional DVRS devices are designed to provide out of vehicle communications for Mission Critical personnel by using the high power mobile radio in the vehicle to extend the talk back range of the low powered, Press To Talk, low powered portable radios.

While these Digital Vehicular Repeater Systems are sometimes offered as Full Duplex Repeaters, the actual communication to the user is via traditional, two frequency simplex, portable radios, that as you know, means the user cannot receive when they are transmitting. This results in the user not knowing whether they have access to the system when they are transmitting, as is often the case on todays trunked radio networks especially during busy periods. Subsequently, when multiple vehicles attend an accident scene, chaos often reigns, except for the most highly DVRS trained officers or field personnel.
